Yay! Football season is finally here. I thought I'd celebrate by posting this clip from "Free To Be You and Me"--Marlo Thomas' video from the 70's, which is probably entirely to blame for the entire genre of emo music. The crown jewel of the movie is the song "It's Alright to Cry" by Rosey Grier, former Los Angeles Rams football badass and needlepoint afficianado. After a tough day of cracking skulls on the gridiron, Grier liked to unwind with some needlepoint. In fact, in 1973, he published Rosey Grier's Needlepoint for Men, an inspirational book filled with all sorts of masculine needlepoint patterns, including tennis raquet covers, a jazz combo, and strangely, a pillow with a gangster holding a bomb.
One of my first posts on Extreme Craft was a Flickr gallery of scans from Needlepoint for Men. Celebrate the beginning of football season with a visit to the Flickr gallery. I checked Alibris, and they have plenty of copies of the book available for as low as $6. Do yourself (or your football-loving loved one) a favor, and order a copy today! Go team!
