I was having a discussion with a friend the other week about rap music. He was talking about how future generations would view gangsta rap and other current rap music as an abomination...violent, misogynistic and not socially redeeming in the least. I only needed to point to one thing to refute his point--how nostalgia has dealt with heavy metal. Growing up, I was scared shitless of heavy metal....Too bad I only discovered Spinal Tap as a grown-up.
Looking at 80's hair metal through the prism of twenty years is an interesting thing. VH1 is still clamoring to make reality shows about the washed up practitioners of metal...Rock of Love featuring Bret Michaels may just be the end game of the reality genre. All I'm saying is that time has neutered heavy metal. I think my mom would be perfectly happy to bop along to most stuff by Motley Crue or Poison.
Seattle graphic designer and illustrator Boo Davis knows about the warm, fuzzy comforting side of heavy metal. Her company, Quiltsrÿche churns out heirloom quality metal quilts that incorporate imagery of the beast with your own vintage concert T-shirts. As a designer, Davis is impeccable, and as crystallizer of pop culture, unimpeachable. Get your metal quilt today! If not for you...then at least think of your grandbabies.
