Sometimes a person comes along that we call a "game changer". I think it's safe to say that Sarah Lavely fits into that category. A while back, she realized that her love of breaking things could be translated into cold hard cash, and Sarah's Smash Shack was born. The Smash Shack is a San Diego-based business with special rooms where you and your closest friends can gather and satisfyingly smash things to your heart's (and wallet's) content. Genius. God bless America.
As a ceramic artist, I'm blessed with plenty of material to smash. Nothing quite satisfies like sending a piece of art that doesn't meet with my approval to a fractured grave. It's tougher than you think to find a great place to safely smash things while getting that satisfying sound of something breaking into a bazillion different pieces...which is why Sarah's Smash shack suggests you leave it to the pros. The Smash Shack has become so successful, that they recently added a VIP lounge and a larger group room. They even recently added a mobile unit, where they can bring the smashing right to your front door.
I'm probably going to have plenty of things to smash and leave to the shard piles of Jingdezhen when my time in the studio here is done. I wonder how future archaeologists are going to interpret porcelain casts of soap bottles with baroque handles and spouts. Maybe I'll break the rejects into so many pieces that they won't even be able to try.
LINK thanks Matt!
